What way...

What a way to start my day by reading THIS piece of crap in The NY Times. I'm so pissed at this article that I have nothing intelligent to say. All I could do this morning is swear like a sailor and then swear some more.

Isa wrote a little something about it over at her LJ. She seems to be able to put into words how frustrated I am... but the 3 hour time difference she has to digest this piece of crap article probably helped. I can't wait to wrestle Isa... I'm going to smother her with love.

That poor baby didn't die because he was vegan... he died because of uneducated parents. I've met plenty of nutritionally uneducated meaty parents ... this isn't a vegan issue.

So to make me feel better I went over to The Herbivore Blog and looked at photos of Ruby who is a shining example of a healthy vegan baby who is going to grow up and change the world!! Go Rubes! Go!

I can't wait for Ruby to grow up and hit people over the head with Omega3 fatty acids!

Yeah, the veganism they claimed was an excuse to try and cover up their neglect. I tried to read that woman's book but when I got to the section about veg*nism I stopped and returned it to library. Ick.

I saw that, too and it totally pissed me off. I immediately forwarded it to the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine to see if Neal Bernard, MD, or another MD can write a response. (I think hearing the FACTS from a doctor would be much more impactful and resonate more with the public.)

There are so many healthy vegan babies out there--but you never hear of them.

You're right--it is not a vegan issue. Non-vegan babies starve to death to--and in all of these cases, the issue is neglect, sad as it is.

well, my vegan baby in utero is 30 weeks but measuring a very healthy 33 weeks plus... Yes, I am low in B12, but I could have been low during my last pregnancy, I only know this time because I asked the to check, and it's not so dangerously low that I need a shot or anything, we're bringing it up with supplements and eating the right foods.

People who write articles like that just display their ignorace about nutrition....

i had just finished reading that article, gettting pissed off... i then read a few pro-veg-kid articles, and started to feel better about the thought of me bringing a vegan kid in the world (some day)...

Blech. I have a vegan toddler who is much healthier than his omni friends, and a big vegan babe in utero. So there, NY Times! My toddler is at a perfect weight for his age; his dr & naturopath both know he's vegan, and have no problems with it at all. People are always commenting on how well he eats, and how healthful the foods are that we provide for him. This article enraged me. Boo.

This has NOTHING to do with veganism, it has to do with irresponsible parents and that writer not doing proper research!!!!!!!!! Has she met a vegan baby???? They are fat, healthy, super happy and miles ahead of meat eaters.

BAH!!!!!!

I know. I already wrote a letter to People magazine because they ran a story on it. "Did a vegan diet kill this baby?" What effing 6 week old eats meat or dairy, anyway? They usually eat breast milk or soy formula (cause they can't digest dairy!) Ruby is so cute. I saw her at a Bday party when I went to Oregon. Happy and HEALTHY.

I am SOOO glad that that article appears to be in the OPINION section!! (unless I mis-read that). I wonder who funded her book.......?? Like so many other people have said, I have two very healty vegan children who are much healthier than their obese counterparts, or "normal" omnivores.

i'm right there with you. the vegan part had nothing to do with that babies death, just plain ignorance. it says right on the soy milk carton "do not use as formula". duh. my child is three and a half and another perfect example of a healthy vegan child! also, i remained vegan throughout my whole pregnancy. my doctor was amazed at how great all my levels were coming back when they would do blood work. she said my levels were way better for protein than most women she saw that ate meat.

That is such a bunch of total crap! I get so tired of the "you must eat meat" rhetoric. The world would be a much happier, more peaceful place if people chose a vegetarian or vegan diet. They've done lots of studies on this, but those results never seem to get published. Why????

I know we can't save the world, but I guess we can try to do things on a small scale, one day at a time.

Babies are "made out of fish oils," eh? So what about all those people who grew up centuries ago in landlocked areas where fish was eaten seldom-to-never? And what about the fact that throughout history around most of the world, ordinary people only had the chance to eat meat rarely?

People can be so stupid: they look at how we live now and can't conceive that things used to be drastically different.

wow
a lot of 'vegan babies are miles a head of non-vegan babies'
that kind of talk is as ignorant as the ny times article.
do your research,
make educated decisions,
but bashing others - even comparing others is irrelavent...
eat what feels right for you
tofu, seitan, meat what ever.
why attack others if you are ok with your own choices.
I know as many 'potato chip' vegans as I do healthy vegans.
education is key.

relax and be content with your diet choices - why let some freelance writer ruin your day.
talk about giving up your power.
