Well I had a long talk with the vet today and we've decided for NO SURGERY! We are going to maintain his glands with regular visits and keep him comfortable that way.
I'm glad. I really didn't want the little guy to go through all that. :)

most of me is squeamish-ed out by the thought of what he has to go through but the weird part that loves popping blackheads is kind of intrigued...
I don't know what grub you feed wee Fergus but I have been reading a very interesting book on natural remedies for dogs and cats which advocates a raw food diet and it says that when dogs are on their natural diet of unprocessed raw meat and bones (hard for a vegan I know) it works the muscles of their glands and they rarely ever develop anal sac issues. I haven't yet switched to this way of feeding my dog but I am seriously thinking about it. Book by CJ.Puotinen yay for no surgery tho! :)
We take our lil guy in once every 6-8 weeks to have his anal glands expressed because we refused to have the surgery as well. The vet tells us it's easy for us to do at home, but we can't seem to ever get the amount of ass-juice out that the vet does so we just bring him in.
We just adopted a little puppers back in July, and he's had to have his glands expressed twice already. I have a feeling I'm going to have to start doing it myself, which is not the most exiting thought. I've heard that increasing the fiber in a dog's diet is supposed to help, but I haven't tried yet. If you find any great alternate therapies for this, please let us all know. My dog and his bum will thank you. :)
Good luck!
