How was your holiday?

Mine was mmmmeeeeellllooowwww. As most of you know - Gerry and I don't celebrate the holidays. We opted out ... gosh ... maybe 12 years ago? Unfortunately the rest of the world hasn't opted out yet so I spend the weeks before the holidays dodging the collective stress of the general public. I did pretty good this year - avoided the mall, grocery shopping at night, only going to the post office when it was absolutly necessary.

The snow really helped keep things mellow.
Victoria pretty much became a ghost town because of the snow. We have no infrastructure to deal with large amounts of snow ... so while it was a drag that I couldn't drive anywhere and poor Fergus couldn't get the kind of exercise I like to give him, it made the whole town quiet over the holidays. It was kind of lovely.

I spent some time baking. I veganized Gerry's Mum's shortbread recipe (will share soon).
I haven't been doing much baking lately and it was happy to see me.
Gerry was happy to have some cookies ...
Did some more work on the office. Prepared and painted the wall. Painted the trim. Now I'm patiently waiting for my Ikea delivery to arrive. It was delayed due to weather. Bah.

On X-mas Day Gerry, Fergus and I met up with our friends Stu and Sly and walked down to Cook St Villiage for coffee. The sun was shining and there were lots of smily people hanging out at the coffee shop. Gerry and I dropped the dog off at home and went out to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It was really good. The theater was packed and we almost didn't get seats together.

It was a nice mellow holiday. How did you spend your holidays?

Working in retail, and actually having a record-setting two weeks before Christmas, my life was pretty much work/home, work/home for two solid snow bound weeks.
Christmas day was wonderful and mellow with an early dinner with friends.
Then I didn't feel so hot so I got to relax in emergency at Royal Jubilee for 3 hours. Thanks for the kidney infeciton, Santa!!
Seriously, I'm going to be fine and I had a really awesome day and an unexpected day off on Boxing Day.

I had a lovely time with my family. I have been wanting to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I heard mixed reviews, but I think I will go see it.

Fantastic and mellow.
Had dinner at my Father's, my Stepmother made vegan taco salad! It was very sweet that everyone had a vegan meal with me.

I gave her my copy of HiAV, she recently went veggie, but she has expressed a desire to do more. I wanted to show her how easy vegan cooking can be :)

Well I wanted to thank you for the books you've written and the website. I found your story really inspiring, the love of my cats had a big influence on how I view animals as well. I'm a 22 yr old punk kid/adult, and its nice to have someone you can look up to in lifestyle over run with apathy.

My holiday was pretty similar to yours. Stayed home with hubby, baked and cooked a bit, and mostly just relaxed! I do celebrate Christmas, so on the 25th my husband and I opened the gifts we got each other. It was the first Christmas holiday where I didn't have to run around packing my bags to fly home to see my parents, then arrive home and not be able to relax at all due to the obligatory visits to relatives on all 3 sides of my family. And I must say, now that I've gotten the chance to have a relaxing, mellow Christmas, I can understand the appeal of opting out!

We've been trying to opt out of the holiday craziness for several years now. That's definitely the way to go for me. I wish there were more of us.

We also went to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button & I thought it was great. It exceeded my expectations. I had read a bit of some idiot's review in the newspaper before we left for the theatre that said he only gave the movie a "C". What a dork. What movie did he see??

Happy New Year, Sarah! And Happy New Year to Fergus from our little dog, Scamp.
